The Star wins Gold Cup in Missouri Press Association contest
For the 23rd time in 24 years, The Kansas City Star was a top finisher in the Missouri Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
The Star won the Gold Cup for large daily newspapers with 17-first-place awards and many other honors at the Missouri Press Association Convention Saturday in Springfield.
The newspaper took first for best online newspaper or website and the top award for multi-media reporting for “Fatal Echoes,” an in-depth series on firefighter safety by reporters Mike Hendricks and Matt Campbell, which the judges said was “a true testament to the staff’s dedication to public service.”
The newspaper’s sister publication, Ink, won first for best magazine/alternative publication.
Other first place winners: Eric Adler for best news story; Mary Sanchez for best columnist-serious; Don Munday and Hannah Stinger for headline writing; Scott Canon for best outdoors story; Donald Bradley, history story and best story about rural life or agriculture; Rick Montgomery for best religion story and best military story; Joe Robertson, education story; Donna McGuire for news or feature obituary; Allison Long for feature photo; Rich Sugg for best photo illustration; Rustin Dodd, sports feature story; and Tod Palmer, best sports news story or package.
Second place awards: staff for general excellence, overall design and information graphic; Bradley for news or feature obituary, feature story and history story; Laura Bauer, story about rural life or agriculture; Montgomery for military story; Ashley Scoby for sports feature story; Lee Judge, cartoonist; Cindy Hoedel and Aaron Randle, news or feature series; Scoby, Jesse Newell and Mará Williams, sports news story or package; Bauer, Williams and Ian Cummings for best news story; and Campbell, Bauer, Tony Rizzo, Hunter Woodall, Steve Vockrodt and Katherine Knott, breaking news story.
Third-place awards: business coverage, editorial pages and best editorial; Neil Nakahodo, information graphic; David Eulitt and Terez Paylor, best video; Shane Keyser, sports photograph; Vahe Gregorian, sports feature story; Bauer, news or feature obituary; Sam Mellinger, sports columnist; Bradley for religion story; and the staff for best investigative reporting on the Verruckt tragedy.
Star staffers also won honorable mentions in 10 categories.
