Home construction in KC area picks up

Permits for new-home construction in the Kansas City area climbed in February compared with a year earlier, the Home Builders Association of Greater Kansas City reported.

The association said 260 single-family permits were issued in the eight-county area last month, up from 216 permits in February 2014, and 235 issued this January.

The year-to-date total of 495 permits is off slightly from the 503 permits issued for single-family homes through the first two months of 2014.

“As we get into 2015, we are hearing more about business expansion and new residents relocating to the KC area and that is fueling optimism for spring new home sales,” Sara Corless, the association’s executive vice president said in a statement.

The association also reported 102 permits were issued last month for multi-family units.

Kansas City remained the top city for single-family permits in February, followed by Olathe, Overland Park, Lee’s Summit and Blue Springs.

The association also reported that Summit Custom Homes had the most home construction permits in 2014, with 226. It was followed by Rodrock Homes, James Engle Custom Homes, Sallee Homes and PC Homes.
