KC tech firm MindMixer receives $17 million in venture capital

MindMixer, a fast-growing technology firm that recently moved its headquarters to Kansas City, has received $17 million in new venture capital.

The funding brings the total amount MindMixer has raised to $23.2 million in the four years since the company was launched.

The lead investor in its third and latest round of financing was Dundee Venture Capital, an Omaha firm that has participated in previous funding efforts and is a significant partner, said Nick Bowden, MindMixer’s co-founder and chief executive officer.

Other investors included the Govtech Fund from the San Francisco area, and several others who were not identified.

“The fund raising is an affirmation of the good work that we’ve done,” said Bowden.

MindMixer was founded in Omaha but established its headquarters here this spring at 1627 Main St. in the Crossroads district. The company consolidated most of its operations from Omaha and another location in Lincoln, Neb., at the Kansas City office.

The firm now has about 80 employees, mostly in Kansas City. Bowden said an additional 50 to 80 workers are expected to be hired by the end of this year or early 2015. MindMixer still operates small offices in Omaha and Lincoln.

MindMixer has developed what it calls engagement software and specializes in hosting interactive online websites for companies, governments, school districts, civic institutions and others that want to present information and get feedback from consumers and clients.

The company’s area clients include the Kansas City streetcar program, the Kansas City School District, and the Arts KC Regional Arts Council.

“We also have some (area) school districts, and some county and city governments coming on over the next couple of months,” Bowden said.

As a privately held company, MindMixer does not disclose financial results. But according to Bowden, the company’s revenues have grown by “40-to-50 percent each quarter for the last several years.”

MindMixer works with many major cities throughout the United States, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Indianapolis and San Francisco. The company also works with about 30 entities in Canada, along with several clients in New Zealand, Australia and Spain.
