Compass Minerals Inc. on Monday reported sharply lower third-quarter sales and profits, as business slowed in its road salt and plant nutrition operations.

The Overland Park-based minerals company said quarterly revenue fell 23 percent to $179.6 million compared with 2015’s third quarter revenue of $232.7 million.

Earnings fell 66 percent during the three months to $9.1 million.

“While our quarterly results fell below 2015 levels, we did perform in line with our expectations in the challenging highway deicing and plant nutrition markets,” Fran Malecha, Compass Minerals’ president and chief executive, said in a statement.
