Assurant reports quarterly decline in operating income

Assurant Employee Benefits, the specialty insurance and employee benefits company headquartered in Kansas City, reported a 33 percent decline in net operating income in the fourth quarter because of disability policy payouts.

The company said it had net operating income of $7.2 million in the quarter, compared with $10.8 million in the same period a year earlier.

For the year, however, net operating income climbed 41 percent to $48.7 million.
