KC Current players will flip the switch for Plaza Lights this Thanksgiving
Six KC Current players will flip the switch for the Plaza Lights this Thanksgiving, honoring a longtime Kansas City tradition now in its 92nd year.
The National Women’s Soccer League franchise kicked off its inaugural season in 2020 and unveiled its official name last month. Now, the team is excited to take part in the iconic celebration alongside thousands of Kansas Citians, said Angie Long, one of the three co-owners.
“We’re on a mission to elevate women’s sports and make a difference in the Kansas City community,” Long said in a statement Thursday. “Participating in this iconic celebration on the Plaza is an honor and our team cannot wait to celebrate the holiday and the city that we love.”
The festivities begin at 5 p.m. Thanksgiving Day with musical performances and giveaways from the main stage at Nichols Road and Pennsylvania Avenue.
KC Current players Tristin Stuteville, Elizabeth Ball, Sydney Miramontez, Kristen Edmonds, Kristen Hamilton and Jaycie Johnson will flip the switch for the Plaza Lights at 6:52 p.m., followed by a fireworks display.
The event’s chief sponsor is Evergy. The show will be broadcast live on KMBC, hosted by anchor Lara Moritz, beginning at 6 p.m.
Featured entertainment will include performances by Quixotic and Musical Theater Heritage. Kansas City-based soft rock group “Summer Breeze” will close out the night with a one-hour show.
The celebration has been long regarded as the official start to the holiday season. Last year’s lighting was more measured as area health experts discouraged large crowd gatherings amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Once lit, the Plaza Lights will stay bright until Jan. 9.
