The KC Current’s biggest jersey-donning fan wears No. 15 for the Kansas City Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes didn’t get far with his suggestion for the new name of Kansas City’s National Women’s Soccer League team.
His favorite moniker — “Fountains,” or some variation thereof, playing off Kansas City’s nickname as the “City of Fountains” — didn’t make the cut.
Instead, Mahomes’ fiancee, Brittany Matthews, a co-owner of the NWSL team along with husband-wife duo Chris and Angie Long, unveiled the nickname “KC Current” during a halftime ceremony at the team’s regular-season finale last Saturday.
The final decision still won a big thumbs-up from Mahomes.
“I gave my input and it was shot down,” Mahomes said. “They came up with a better name than I thought. ... Current sounds way better.”
The team operated as KC NWSL in its first season of existence this year. The new nickname announced Saturday night was latest in a series of big developments for team that is building a new stadium along the city’s riverfront and constructing a new practice facility in Riverside.
Mahomes, who wore a KC Current jersey bearing the club’s re-designed crest before and after the Chiefs’ Monday Night Football victory over the New York Giants, said he and Matthews are all-in when it comes to supporting the area’s sports teams.
“We love this community,” he said. “We love the people in this community and how much they support us through the thick and thin. They’ve embraced me, and I’ve become part of this family.”
