One of the most common questions first-time cruisers ask is whether they need to exchange their dollars for local currency when travelling internationally. The answer isn't always straightforward, and understanding exchange rates can prevent you from getting taken advantage of.

TravelHost's Come Cruise With Me Editor in Chief Daniel Kline and his travel agent partner, Postcard Travel Planning's Dennis Post, recently answered this question while visiting Cozumel, Mexico, and share the practical tips every cruiser needs to know about handling money in port in the video below.

Dan Kline: Hey there cruisers. Dan and Dennis, your travel hosts, coming to you from Cozumel, Mexico.

Dennis Post: Beautiful.

Kline: And we are answering questions. Dennis, we get asked this all the time, but I didn't even know the answer for this myself. When you visit a Caribbean port, do you need to get local currency? Or in Mexico do you need pesos?

Post: No, as matter of fact, they like the American currency.

Kline: They prefer American currency.

What you ought to know, though, is what's the exchange rate. Do you want to maybe look online? Now, the exchange rate is going to vary. But let's say it's one American dollar equals 18 pesos. You don't want to go someplace where they give you one American dollar equals 12 pesos.

Post: Yeah.

Kline: You want to be a little bit aware because we went into a 7-Eleven. We bought a bunch of stuff for my friend Sergio, who works on Celebrity XCel, and it was like 70,000 pesos and there was a ten minute mark. We were like, uh-oh, did we just spend a lot of money? No.

You need to know what you're doing. You need to know what it is now.

American dollars, you might pay a little bit of a premium like your cab ride, but you don't need cash that often.

Most stores will take a credit card and they will give you the going bank exchange rate, so you're not going to get hosed. You want to use your credit card whenever possible, as long as you're someplace where it's credible.

Now look, we're in Mexico. People have Square. People have all the different payment methods. So generally you're safe. But maybe that guy on the beach selling you a coconut. Don't give him your credit card.

Other than that, you're good. I am Dan, he is Dennis. Come cruise with us soon.
