Keeping your cell phone connected while cruising the Caribbean sounds simple, but the wrong settings can result in hundreds of dollars in unexpected charges. Different carriers have completely different policies, and what works in one port might not work in another.

TravelHost's Come Cruise With Me Editor in Chief Daniel Kline and his travel agent partner, Postcard Travel Planning's Dennis Post, recently explained how cell phone service works on Caribbean cruises, which carriers offer the best deals, and how to avoid costly mistakes in the video below.

Dan Kline: Hey there cruisers. Dan and Dennis, your travel hosts coming to you from El Cid in Cozumel. Losing my voice a little bit here. Probably, maybe a couple, a few too many drinks here.

We are answering questions. One of the questions we get asked is "Will my cell phone work when I'm sailing in the Caribbean?" It's not always an easy answer.

Dennis, what are you supposed to look for other than maybe calling your cell phone carrier beforehand? What do you look for in port to know if your phone's going to work?

Dennis Post: Always look for a text because your your carrier will communicate with your phone to try and let you know: I have service. I don't have service. $0.25 a minute for a phone call.

Free text messages. Look for that first, but also research. Look at your carrier.

Kline: I'm a T-Mobile customer. T-Mobile in most of these markets gives you free data and free texting, but not free calling. It's usually about a quarter to call. Now, you could upgrade.

They sell a $10 pass. Most of the carriers have the equivalent. And sometimes if you're going on like a ten day voyage, you could buy like a seven day pass and only activate it certain days.

So you want to do your homework a little bit, and also you want to check your phone bill. It is really easy to forget to go on airplane mode and wake up and you've spent $300. Your phone company will generally forgive that.

T-Mobile will send you a note saying, "Hey, you're on a cruise, you should do something."

AT&T and Verizon will not do that, so be very careful. Monitor your bill. Make sure you're on airplane mode. When you get off the ship, though, get off airplane mode. Watch for that text message.

Post: Yeah.

Kline: I am Dan. He is Dennis. Come cruise with us soon.
