Popular drive-thru display of holiday lights will return to KC’s Northland
Winter Magic and its array of synchronized holiday lights stretching over more than 1 mile will return for its second year at Platte Purchase Park in the Northland with more lights and a new mix of songs. Benefiting Children’s Mercy Hospital, it will open Saturday, Nov. 1, and run through Jan. 4.
The Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department’s popular drive-thru event features what is billed as the Midwest’s longest animated light tunnel.
It will kick off Saturday, Nov. 1, with a lighting ceremony at 6:45 p.m. followed by a parade and official drive-thru at 7 p.m. Tickets for opening night are $30. Otherwise, admission ranges from $20 to $40 per vehicle, depending on expected demand.

When does it operate?
After opening night, the first time slots will be at 6 each night. The final entry times will vary from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Where is it?
Winter Magic will take place at Platte Purchase Park, 10400 N. Platte Purchase Drive. That is off Northwest 100th Street near Missouri 152 and U.S. 169.
How much does it cost?
Reserved time slots online are $20 to $40, and weeknights are typically cheapest. Admission at the gate will be $7 more. No cash will be accepted on site.
What kind of vehicles are allowed?
Cars, trucks, SUVs and vans are permitted; vehicles holding more than 15 passengers are not. Also, trailers and vehicles more than 24 feet long or 13 feet tall will not be admitted.
Other things to know
- Lights are synchronized to music that can be played through an FM radio in your vehicle.
- Treats such as popcorn and taffy as well as children’s items will be sold on-site.
- Visitors will not be allowed outside their vehicles.
