Kansas City is in search of artists to feature their work at two future streetcar stops, as a part of the streetcar’s highly anticipated Main Street extension project.

Artists who make it past the selection process will have their work featured at one of two locations, including 51st and Main Streets near the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus or the Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard and Main Street, near the Country Club Plaza.

Artists who shine in the application process will have the chance to become semi-finalists and will be paid $2,000 to develop a design proposal for the work they intend to display at the streetcar stop.

The KC Streetcar Public Art project will consider both three-dimensional and two-dimensional art. Semifinalists may also suggest other locations for placing artwork.

The streetcar extension is set to be completed in 2025. The new route will add 16 stops along Main Street and connect riders to areas like Midtown, the Plaza and UMKC’s campus.

If you have experience with public art or are ready to get your masterpiece on display, you can apply for the opportunity to have your work featured by submitting resumes, letters of interests and portfolios, here.

Applicants also need to be professional visual artist teams or individual artists at least 18 years or older and based in the Greater Kansas City area to be considered.

The application is due July 24, and submitted applications will be reviewed by a panel set by the Kansas City Public Art Administrator.

There will be an information session held on Monday, June 27 at 5:30 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. Prospective applicants can email Public Art Administrator James Martin at james.martin@kcmo.org with questions.
