Put plainly, IIA’s hand in the project shows. I compared about 50 practice questions to questions from past CIA exams and found them nearly identical. And then, you have Becker, the exam prep juggernaut. I felt their influence the most in the user-friendliness and structure of the course.

2. Gleim: Best for Comprehensive Prep

Gleim’s claim to fame is their massive library of exam-quality CPA practice questions. However, these questions tend to be more challenging than the real thing, because Gleim is the choice for “overpreparation.”

That means all of the in-depth material deep-dives your completionist heart could ever dream of, leaving no stone unturned. The goal is that, come exam day, you’ll breeze through because you know it all (and then some).

That same strategy extends to their CIA review course, which offers 3,000+ MCQs, physical and digital textbook options, unlimited practice exams, up to 6 mock exams, 45+ hours of video and audio lectures, personal counselors, a Q&A hotline with internal auditing experts, andmuch more. The questions are maybe 20–25% trickier than those on the real thing, when I compared around 50 of them to past CIA exam questions. 3. Surgent: Best Value

Let’s say you buy a big, beautiful, 4k resolution smart TV for $500. You plug it in, and it doesn’t work. Most stores have a policy where you can either return it for a refund or get an exchange for one that works without any added cost.

And yet, if you buy a prep course, go through the materials, and spend dozens (and maybe even hundreds) of hours studying, if you fail? It’s on you. Sorry, you’re out of luck.

That’s one of the reasons why I really respect Surgent. Every course I’ve seen from them has three key stats: a pass guarantee, a strong pass rate, and what percent of your study time you’ll reduce by using Surgent versus the average competitor.

However, while Surgent is a superb choice for students looking to pass the CIA exam on a budget, you won’t have nearly as enriching an experience as you would with Becker or Gleim. Don’t get me wrong, Surgent works. The questions were pretty similar to those from past exams, other than the wording and tone feeling a bit more… wordy, for lack of a better description. Definitely trickier and less straightforward than the real thing, but I thought that was actually a positive.

That being said, I can only read an eBook on internal auditing for so long before I want to watch a video, listen to an audio lesson while I do my laundry, or… let’s face it, anything else. It gets repetitive and tedious quick, so if you’re not great at deep focus and note-taking, I’d look for a provider with bite-sized videos and a lot of intentional “monotony-breaking activities” like Gleim, which had a more enjoyable cycle of learn, do, practice, refine, repeat, rather than hours of drudgery and no breaks.

After comparing PRC’s materials to the current CIA exam content, I found them to be solid and well-organized. While I haven’t personally taken the CIA exam, I reviewed student feedback and was surprised by how little online discussion there is about PRC. That may simply be because it’s a smaller provider with a lower marketing profile. In fact, I almost overlooked its live classes entirely because they aren’t heavily promoted, even though they’re arguably the course’s biggest strength.

PRC recently updated the course to align with the new CIA exam syllabus, and while the platform itself feels a bit old-school, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you value instructor support and a more traditional learning experience over flashy technology, PRC offers something that many competitors don’t.
