Whole Foods in Johnson County to move to larger spot, join 2 eateries, developer says
Kansas City-based Legacy Development said it is purchasing the high profile Overland Crossing in Overland Park in a deal that will close later this month. The purchase price was not disclosed.
It wants to demolish two restaurant buildings totaling 15,938 square feet, and replace them with a new 44,851-square-foot retail grocery store.
Dave Claflin, vice president of development for Legacy Development, said Whole Foods Market has signed a lease and will relocate its Overland Park store to the center and expand — going from its current 29,300 square feet to 44,851 square feet. It is scheduled to open in spring 2023.
In a statement, a Whole Foods Market spokeswoman said: “I can confirm that a store in Overland Park, KS is in development. At this time, I do not have additional information to share.”
Officials with California-based ACF Property Management, current owners of Overland Crossing, couldn’t be reached Thursday or Friday to confirm the deal.
The new Whole Foods would anchor the center, taking the new building on the southwest corner of 119th Street and Metcalf Avenue. It would have about 223 parking spaces.
The facade would be stucco, brick and limestone with wood and metal accents. Most of the center’s existing buildings would also get a new matching facade.
Elephant Bar Restaurant and then Porto Do Sul Brazilian restaurant had previously operated on the corner. Porto closed in mid-2020.
Plans also call for a 930-square-foot coffee/doughnut shop with drive-thru, and a 9,327-square-foot restaurant, both along Metcalf.
The current Whole Foods Market in the Fountains shopping center, just to the east of Overland Crossing at 6621 W. 119th St., was an original tenant around 2000, but under the Wild Oats Market brand. Whole Foods later acquired Wild Oats.
