KC closings and empty stores: Country Club Plaza, Brookside, Leawood, Legends, Northland

Brookside mainstay Tuesday Morning is closing after nearly three decades.

The location, at 104 W. 63rd St., opened in mid-1992 and is expected to shut down permanently in late August, according to company officials, along with a store in The Village at Shoal Creek, 8365 N. Booth Ave., in the Northland.

The company recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. It plans to close about 230 of its 687 stores to focus on high-performing locations and will do this with a phased approach over the summer, according to its website.

More closings?

More stores have decided to shutter following weeks of being temporarily shut down for the COVID-19 crisis. Some retailers have emptied their locations but have not confirmed if they are closed permanently.

The MAC sign has been removed from the facade of longtime Country Club Plaza retailer MAC Cosmetics.

A manager confirmed the closing Tuesday and directed comments to the corporate. headquarters. Corporate officials have not responded but workers were loading up boxes Wednesday morning at the store, 320 Nichols Road.

It opened on the Plaza in December 1999 and remodeled a decade later, according to Kansas City Star archives.

The Baldwin store is now empty at 422 Nichols Road, as well as in Leawood’s Town Center Crossing and Legends Outlets Kansas City in Kansas City, Kansas.

Are the stores gone for good? Baldwin officials did not respond. Plaza officials did not respond. Town Center Crossing officials declined to comment. But Legends Outlets officials confirmed that their Baldwin store was permanently closed.

Baldwin and sister company Standard Style are no longer listed on the Town Center Crossing website. Baldwin is no longer listed on the Plaza’s website directory. But all three phone numbers are still in operation for messages.

The Walking Company, at 308 W. 47th St., also is empty, the phone number has been disconnected and it is no longer listed on the Plaza’s online directory. Plaza and Walking Co. officials did not respond.

Walking Company opened in the former Steve’s Shoes space in 2006.

The Plaza now has more than two dozen empty spaces. Other recent Plaza closings include The Art of Shaving, Green Grove, Sperry Topsider and Vom Fass, as well as T-Loft restaurant, leaving the shopping district with about two dozen empty spaces.

Sur La Table also is closing.
