Chiefs safety Eric Berry not present for mandatory minicamp

To the surprise of no one, Chiefs safety Eric Berry was not present for the start of the team’s three-day mandatory minicamp on Tuesday.

The Chiefs have until July 15 to work out a long-term contract with Berry, who has been offered a one-year, $10.8 million franchise tender by the Chiefs.

As a nonexclusive franchise player, other teams can offer Berry a contract that the Chiefs could choose to either match or reject. If they were to reject, the Chiefs would receive two first-round picks from the team that signs Berry.

It has become commonplace for players who receive the franchise tag to skip all offseason activities prior to the July 15 deadline. Outside linebacker Justin Houston did the same last year and eventually signed a six-year, $101 million extension at the deadline.

Both the Chiefs and Berry have indicated multiple times that they are interested in getting a long-term deal done.

The Chiefs only have $226,818 in cap space, according to the NFL Players Association, which is the lowest in the NFL. But given the way NFL contracts work, they could actually create cap room in 2016 by signing Berry to a long-term deal.

Injury report

Running back Jamaal Charles, who is rehabbing a torn ACL, will go through warmups and individual drills on Tuesday.

This marks the first time Charles will do so since his injury last fall. He’s been spotted walking and jogging to the side during three of the Chiefs’ voluntary practices in recent weeks.

Guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and tight end Travis Kelce will not practice today due to a sickness, a team spokesman said.

Outside linebacker Tamba Hali (knee), outside linebacker Justin Houston (knee), receiver Mike Williams (hamstring), cornerback Shannon Edwards (hamstring) and cornerback D.J. White (hamstring) will not practice due to their respective injuries.

Linebacker Justin March (knee) and tight end James O’Shaughnessy (foot), who both landed on injured reserve last season, have passed their physicals and should be able to practice.
