One Chief that has taken note of the cold front sweeping through Kansas City this week is rookie kicker Cairo Santos, a native Brazilian who did the majority of his collegiate kicking indoors for Tulane.

“This week, we’ve had the same weather that’s going to be in the game,” Santos said. “It’s going to be in the 20s, windy, so thankfully I got to practice all week in that and kicked well. The thing I noticed is the ball won’t go as far, naturally, and you really have to strike the ball well.”

Santos said he has kicked in the cold before, though it was at a park and it was just for fun.

“Just this last Christmas I was in Chicago with my girlfriend’s family and it was zero degrees, and I kicked the ball just to experience it,” Santos said. “But playing in a game, it was in the 30s at Marshall, it was raining. It was cold and bad conditions, but anything below that I’ve never experienced (in a game) other than practice here. I imagine it will be the same as practice.”

Santos said he’s already started planning for the cold weather Sunday.

“I might have to change plant (shoes) — I’m ready to bring a different pair for my plant foot if I need to go with bigger studs or anything like that,” Santos said. “I’m ready for that, but I won’t make that call until I test the field and go through warm-ups. Maybe I won’t need to do anything because our fields are pretty hard here, and during the week my normal shoes worked perfect. We’ll definitely have to play it by ear, but I’ll be ready with the right type of gear.”

For his part, Chiefs coach Andy Reid doesn’t seem too concerned about how the weather might affect his rookie kicker, who has made 10 straight field goals after a rough start.

“He’ll be OK, I think,” Reid said. “I’m not too worried about that.”
