The Royals added pitching depth by signing right-handed reliever Ryan Madson to a minor-league contract.

Madson, 34, hasn’t pitched since 2011 when he went 4-2 with 32 saves and a 2.37 ERA, helping the Phillies win the National League East.

Madson signed a one-year deal with the Reds for 2012 but missed the entire season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

He attempted a comeback with the Angels in 2013 but made one minor-league appearance before reinjuring the elbow.

All of Madson’s career stats — 47-30, 52 saves and 3.59 ERA — have come in nine seasons with the Phillies.
