Christian Colon struggles in place of Omar Infante at second base
Royals infielder Christian Colon is not exactly seizing his opportunity to latch onto the second-base job in the absence of injured Omar Infante.
In fact, Colon isn’t seizing much of anything.
In Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, he made two errors — one on a grounder, one on a hurried throw after kicking a grounder hit by slow-footed Albert Pujols. Colon also botched a tailor-made double-play ball and had to settle for a force out. All in a span of five innings.
“It was one of those days,” Colon said on Monday. “I had a bad day. That was yesterday. Today is today. It was kind of tough to see … there was a glare …
“It snowballed a little bit. … I don’t have any answers other than to say it was a bad day.”
Colon said he hoped the bad day in the field wouldn’t carry over to the plate, but he went hitless in three at-bats and his batting .222 in four starts.
“Hitting-wise, we’re still finding the timing,” Colon said. “It was my fourth game …”
Infante, battling an inflammation in his right elbow, is scheduled to serve as designated hitter in one of the Royals’ split-squad games . Rookie Raul Mondesi started at second on Monday against Milwaukee, and nonroster veteran Ryan Jackson is scheduled to start one of the split-squad games.
