The two-man duo of running back Dylan Streeter and receiver Mason Dunsmore proved to be the difference as St. James Academy defeated De Soto 26-10 Friday night at St. Thomas Aquinas.

The victory improved the Thunder to 3-0, while the Wildcats fell to 2-1.

The game was delayed an hour by the heavy rains and lightning that hit the Kansas City area.

In an interesting twist, Streeter didn’t start at running back.

“Jake Burgmeier twisted an ankle on the second series, so we went with Streeter,” Radke said.

De Soto scored first on a 5yard run by senior quarterback Nate Thompson with 5:41 left in the first half.

The Thunder cut the margin to 7-3 on a 34-yard field goal by Streeter with 49.7 seconds left in the half.

De Soto elected to pass after getting the kickoff. On the third play, a pass deflected off the hands and was intercepted by Streeter at the De Soto 40.

“That was a great play and really came at a critical time for us,” Thunder coach Tom Radke said.

Quarterback Trey Keith found Dunsmore for a 25-yard gain to the 20 and two plays later, Dunsmore made a nice diving catch at the 3-yard line.

Streeter got the touchdown on the next play but missed the extra point.

And St. James scored on its first possession of the third quarter. The key play was a 36-yard Keith to Dunsmore pass.

Streeter got the touchdown on a 19-yard sweep around the left end with 7:09 left in the third quarter.

The Wildcats cut the margin to 16-10 on a 37-yard field goal by senior Cooper Lee with 10:06 left in the game.

But Streeter carried St. James in for the win, kicking a 20-yard field goal at the 6:27 mark and scoring on a 5-yard run at 3:21.

He had 19 carries for 148 yards, and Dunsmore got five passes for 100 yards.

“This was a great win for us in a rivalry game,” Radke noted.
