Missouri linebacker Kentrell Brothers is honored again
Missouri senior linebacker Kentrell Brothers was chosen as a second-team All-American on Monday by the Football Writers Association of America.
He also landed on the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s All-America second team last Thursday and was chosen Sunday as a second-team All-American by The Associated Press.
Earlier in the week, Brothers was a first-team All-SEC pick in voting by the conference’s coaches. He also was a first-team All-SEC selection on Monday, according to the Associated Press.
Sophomore defensive end Charles Harris was a second-team Associated Press All-SEC selection.
Brothers’ name first popped up on All-America lists as a first-team selection by CBS Sports and Sports Illustrated, but neither of those is officially used by the NCAA to determine unanimous and consensus All-American honors.
Brothers was joined on the first team on both CBS Sports’ and Sports Illustrated’s lists by Notre Dame junior Jaylon Smith and Alabama senior Reggie Ragland.
Smith and Ragland also selected to the Walter Camp first team along with Temple’s Tyler Matakevich.
That same trio was selected ahead of Brothers on The Associated Press’ list.
Ragland, Matakevich and Wisconsin’s Joe Schobert were first-team choices by the Football Writers Association of America.
The five official All-America lists sanctioned by the NCAA are Walter Camp Football Foundation, The Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, The Sporting News (to be released Tuesday) and American Football Coaches Association (to be released Wednesday).
The NCAA will formally announce the consensus All-America team on Thursday.
Brothers leads the nation with 152 tackles, which ranks fourth in a season in Missouri history.
Pro Football Focus dubbed Brothers as the nation’s “Most Dominant Tackler” when doling out its superlatives.
According to Pro Football Focus, Brothers actually graded out better than Ragland*, who was chosen as the SEC defensive player of the year.
* It’s worth noting here that sophomore defensive end Charles Harris was a second-team All-SEC pick by Pro Football Focus and Olathe South graduate Braden Smith, now a guard at Auburn, was a first-team selection.
Brothers finished with 39 more tackles than any other players in the SEC and 12 more than any player in the nation.
Brothers recorded double-digit tackles in 11 of 12 games, including a career-high 17 on Oct. 17 at Georgia. He also finished with 12 tackles for a loss, 2 1/2 sacks, two interceptions, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, three blocked kicks, a quarterback hurry and three pass breakups.
