MU football, men’s basketball teams land commitments

Both the Missouri football team and men’s basketball team landed commitments from players on official visits Saturday.

The Tigers’ football team landed a commitment from Albert Okwuegbunam, an athlete from Sacred Heart-Griffin High School in Springfield, Ill.

Okwuegbunam, a 6-foot-5, 215-pound prospect, is a three-star Rivals recruit, ranked No. 54 nationally and No. 15 in the state of Illinois. He projects as a tight end with the potential to also play wide receiver for the Tigers.

Okwuegbunam, who also had offers from Michigan State and Nebraska among others, becomes the 14th known commitment in Missouri’s 2016 class.

Meanwhile, second-year coach Kim Anderson’s squad landed its first commitment for 2016 in 6-10 center Mitchell Smith from Van Buren, Ark.

Smith, a three-star prospect, also had offers from Oklahoma State, Creighton, Tulsa and Missouri State, according to Rivals.

He fills a massive need for the Tigers, who already are short players in the post and will lose Ryan Rosburg to graduation.
