Evan Maxwell, a 6-foot-10 center who played last season at Liberty University, will be transferring to Kansas next season, he confirmed in a text message to The Star on Saturday night.

Maxwell, who visited KU earlier this week, averaged 10 points and 4.8 rebounds as a sophomore last season. He also was considering Baylor, Virginia Tech and Cincinnati.

The move fills in one of KU’s vacant scholarships. Following Cheick Diallo’s decision to turn pro Friday, coach Bill Self briefly had three scholarships available before Maxwell’s decision trimmed that number to two.

Because of transfer rules, Maxwell will have to sit out next season before having two more years of eligibility.
