Former South Carolina linebacker Marcquis Roberts says he will transfer to Kansas

The Kansas football program landed a potential transfer for the second straight day. This one could be eligible to play this season.

Former South Carolina linebacker Marcquis Roberts announced Monday that he plans to finish his career at KU. He is expected to be eligible right away as a graduate transfer. For Roberts, a former three-star recruit, it’s a fresh start after an injury-plagued four years at South Carolina.

Roberts’ announcement came one day after former Texas A&M receiver Laquvionte Gonzalez said he also planned to transfer to KU. The addition of Roberts would help Kansas address some major depth issues at linebacker.

“It feels like a (second) chance,” Roberts wrote in an announcement on his Facebook page. “I will be playing and working toward my (master’s) at Kansas University.”

Roberts, who is listed at 6 feet 1 and 216 pounds, had a long injury history while at South Carolina. He missed his freshman season in 2011 because of a shoulder injury and suffered a torn ACL in 2012, according to the Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston, S.C.

Roberts, a native of Powder Springs, Ga., started nine games in 2013 and five in 2014. He was expected to miss spring practice this year because of another shoulder injury. Coincidentally, Roberts’ decision comes after former KU safety Isaiah Johnson elected earlier this month to head to South Carolina as a graduate transfer.
