What’s at stake

K-State is hoping to move to 2-0 and take an early lead in the conference standings. Iowa State is simply hoping to bounce back and show its fans it is a better team than the group that lost to North Dakota State.

Cheers if …

Tyler Lockett is back to returning kicks and catching deep passes. K-State is at its best when he is on the field.

Jeers if …

K-State’s linebackers fail to keep tabs on Sam Richardson. Iowa State’s quarterback is a gifted runner, and he could put up big yardage if the Wildcats continue to defend the middle the way they did against Stephen F. Austin.

Three things about Iowa State

1 The Cyclones will be without two starters when they take the field Saturday. Top receiver Quenton Bundrage suffered a torn ACL last week and right tackle Jacob Gannon left the team for personal reasons on Thursday. Center Tom Farniok, who missed part of the opener because of an injury, is expected to play.

2 Iowa State enters the game with the nation’s 104th-ranked run defense after allowing 302 rushing yards during a 34-14 loss against North Dakota State. Four different Bison runners topped 35 yards, and two had single runs of 65-plus yards.

3 Sam Richardson is a skilled dual-threat quarterback. He threw for 151 yards and ran for 58 yards against North Dakota State.

Key matchup

Charles Jones and DeMarcus Robinson vs. Iowa State’s front seven. If K-State’s main running backs can duplicate North Dakota State’s rushing stats, Iowa State will have no chance on defense. Lockett is expected to play an every-down role Saturday. The Wildcats want to get him, and their running game, going.

Kellis Robinett’s pick: K-State 28-17

On paper, K-State looks like a heavy favorite. But losing to North Dakota State isn’t the sign of an awful team. The Wildcats rebounded from a loss to the Bison and won eight games a year ago. Iowa State will fight back. That will be enough to keep this one close, K-State should prevail by double digits.
