Indiana Fever Coach Stephanie White Breaks Silence on Caitlin Clark Incident

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White and Caitlin Clark are not making a big deal of their recent animated exchange on the bench.

During the Fever's game against the Portland Fire on Saturday, White and Clark were seen having a rather intense interaction during a timeout. It sparked a lot of controversy about the relationship between the two because it led to White asking rookie Raven Johnson to take Clark's place in the huddle.

The two didn't address what happened in the postgame press conference. After that, Skip Bayless claimed that White had been fired by the Fever, a report that was quickly shut down by several reporters. Still, it only fueled speculation about a potential strain in their relationship.

On Monday, they finally addressed the exchange and played it down. According to White, it's just simple coaching.

"What happened in that moment is, I was challenging a player," White said, per WISH-TV News. "It's coaching, is what it is. I don't often think it becomes an issue if you're watching it in men's sports, most of the time."

The Fever coach emphasized that she has a "great" relationship with Clark and that those saying otherwise are simply using "sensationalism" to get attention. White also repeated what she said recently about Clark: that they have plenty of similarities and that she loves working with her.

"My relationship with Caitlin is great. I love Caitlin. I ride with her," White stated. "We have a great relationship, and I think the narrative of people trying to make something that it's not is just taking sensationalism to try to get some clicks, and all the other stuff. She wants to be coached. I want her to help me be a better coach. We're both competitive. We're both stubborn. We're more alike than different. Hopefully, we continue to bring the best out of each other."

As for Clark, she said that it's just "two people being competitive." The Fever playmaker added that White always has her back and what happened between them is just normal.

The Fever dropped to 4-4 on the season with their recent loss, so the team's focus right now is on getting back on track as they try to compete for a championship. Clearly, there's no concern surrounding Clark and White.
