John Harbaugh, Giants Make $6 Million Decision Amid NFL Offseason
Despite there being a new energy around the franchise, the New York Giants are in an undesirable situation this offseason.
While hiring Jim Harbaugh as the team's new head coach was a huge win, the Giants rank No. 21 in the league in available cap space. This could end up limiting the team's abilities to make moves down the line, but it doesn't mean that the organization cannot find ways to free up some space.
On Thursday, the Giants did just that.
As reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Giants restructured the contract of left tackle Andrew Thomas.
"Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas restructured his contract Wednesday, creating $6.46 million of added salary cap space for the team this year," wrote Schefter on X. "Thomas converted his base salary to a roster bonus to make the space."
Thomas is under contract with the Giants through 2029, and after his 2023 extension, he is owed around $117 million.
As for the Giants as a team, they are looking to find some success for the first time in a while. The team has finished with a record below .500 in four of the last five seasons, but do have a promising core headlined by quarterback Jaxson Dart, running back Cam Skattebo and pass rusher Brian Burns.
A playoff push in year one may seem outlandish, but with Harbaugh's pedigree, a nice young core and more money to move around, the Giants could have a trick up their sleeves.
