What Tommy Troy's Call-Up Means for the Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks are starting to get a glimpse of the team's next young core.
On Saturday, the Diamondbacks called up top prospect Tommy Troy for his major league debut. Troy was Arizona's first-round pick in 2023 out of Stanford.
Although Arizona drafted him as a shortstop, Troy has shifted around the diamond. With Geraldo Perdomo holding down shortstop, Troy has split time between second base and the outfield.
Troy is in the lineup today, playing left field and batting ninth for his major league debut against the Colorado Rockies. The 24-year-old will get most of his playing time in left field with Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the injured list because of a left hamstring strain.
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Troy will play just about every day in left field while Gurriel is out.

Arizona will now have an outfield composed of Troy in left, Ryan Waldschmidt in center and Corbin Carroll in right. All three players are 25 or younger, giving the Diamondbacks their youngest outfield in quite some time.
The Snakes will hope this is the grouping that remains for the long term.
Troy was thriving with the bat this season at Triple-A Reno. He hit .307/.397/.449 with an .846 OPS, three home runs and 28 RBI.
He has come a long way since his first full season in the minors.
Troy stumbled in 2024, hitting below .240 with just five home runs while battling injuries. Last season, he stayed healthy and showed the makings of the player Arizona selected three years ago.
Troy hit .289 with 15 home runs, an .833 OPS and 24 stolen bases.
The Diamondbacks have started to quietly heat up, winning eight of their last 12 games. They are now three games over .500.
The Snakes are also only 4.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West.
Arizona has managed to tread water through a slew of tough injuries. Their ace, Corbin Burnes, and closer, A.J. Puk, have yet to debut this season. Both are not expected back until after the All-Star break.
But with Troy now in the mix, Arizona can start building toward something bigger. The Diamondbacks will hope to stay in the thick of contention until their injured stars return.
