Seattle Mariners Get New Sheriff

A new sheriff is in Seattle. Well, he's not actually a sheriff, but if he had been born in the 1800s, his name would have been perfect for it.

Colt Emerson, the Mariners' No. 1 prospect and the No. 6 overall prospect in baseball, made his MLB debut on Sunday and is expected to be an everyday third baseman, though he could see action at shortstop, his natural position, as well.

Emerson became the latest minor-leaguer to sign a long-term deal when the Mariners locked him up in an eight-year, $95 million extension – the richest deal ever for a player with zero MLB experience.

Mariners Phenom Ready

Emerson, only 20 years of age, was having success at Triple-A Tacoma before the big call, hitting seven home runs with 10 stolen bases and an .816 OPS in 38 games.

The Mariners selected Emerson at No. 22 in the 2023 MLB Draft out of high school, a legitimate hitting dynamo, plus contact and plus power scouting marks. He's quickly ascended through the ranks and became the youngest call-up for the Mariners since the debut of pitcher Felix Hernandez on Aug. 4, 2005, when he was just 19.

Emerson was rushed from Tacoma to Seattle on Sunday, a late scratch from the minor league lineup, and raced 35 miles to Seattle, where he was installed as its No. 9 hitter vs. the Padres.

He went 0-2 and drew a walk that led to the Mariners' first run.

More From Lindy's Sports:

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander says Emerson is here for the long haul.

"This period will give him some runway," Hollander told MLB.com. "This is not a 15-at-bat or a 20-at-bat tryout to see if he's capable of taking the job and running it with it for the rest of the year. I have zero concerns that he's emotionally ready to handle it, that he's mature enough to handle the day-to-day of the Major League life."

The Mariners (22-26) could certainly use a spark as they try to get back to the playoffs, where they ultimately lost a seven-game thriller to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series.

Seattle was swept by San Diego in three games. The offense ranks 10th in home runs but just 20th in runs scored. Star catcher Cal Raleigh is on the injured list and shortstop J.P. Crawford was pulled from Sunday's game with a triceps injury. His immediate future is in question.

Despite the recent struggles, the Mariners are only two games behind the Athletics in a subpar American League West division.

Fantasy Baseball Impact

As of Monday morning, Emerson was owned in 11.8% of all ESPN Fantasy Leagues. But he has a clear path to everyday play, his Triple-A success suggests power and speed potential, and he's expected to be a solid contact hitter.

It may take some time to get acclimated to The Show, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a 2026 waivers pickup with a higher ceiling.
