Centennial League Meet Sees Lady Spartans Claim Silver, Boys Finish Fourth
The Centennial League Meet for track and field was in action on Friday as the Emporia High Spartans looked to put up another good result. That is what they did as the Lady Spartans took home the silver medal while the Spartans finished just off the podium in fourth place.
There were plenty of medals won by the Lady Spartans individually, leading to the silver medal team finish. Paige Newland continued her dominance in the jumps as she took home the league title in both the long jump and triple jump. Molly Rusco claimed a bronze in the long jump alongside Newland. Kaylee DeWitt added another gold medal in the 300-meter hurdles. Allison Aeschlimann took home a silver medal in the 100-meter hurdles, and Micah Huber rounded out the field events with a bronze medal in the pole vault.
On the track, Harley Smith had a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash and a bronze medal in the 100-meter dash. Emma Beatty took home the silver in the 800-meter run, and to round out the track events, Madison Evans added another silver in the 1600-meter run.
In the relays, the Lady Spartans added two bronze medals. The relay team of Aeschlimann, Smith, DeWitt, and Newland got the bronze medal in the 4x100-meter while Samantha Scobee, DeWitt, Summer Bazan, and Evans got the other bronze in the 4x400-meter.
On the boys' side of the event, they were headlined by Chance Duncan in the throws as he won the discus and placed second in both the shot put and javelin. In the field events, Ben Collins took home the league title in the 110-meter hurdles and a silver medal in the 300-meter hurdles. Rylan Crowell finished with a bronze medal in the long jump, and Cohen Bloomquist took silver in the pole vault. The Spartans finished fourth with a solid showing at the Centennial League meet.
With another good showing for the team, they will look to carry that momentum forward as they will compete in the Regional Qualifying meet on May 22 at Hummer Sports Park in Topeka.
