Emporia softball wraps up regular season Splitting Series against Topeka West

Emporia High School softball concluded its regular season schedule Wednesday, splitting a twinbill with Topeka West.

The Lady Spartans fell in game one, 9-8, but rebounded in the second contest, prevailing, 14-7.

Emporia finished the regular season 12-14. Offense defined these matchups for Emporia as their bats jumped off Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Spartans collected a total of 27 hits, 19 RBIs and a home run by Marley Sewell. Molly Williams logged two doubles and two RBIs. Marley Sewell homered and doubled, batting in two. Oaklie Dawson went 5-8 with three RBIs, and Atlyn Heffron belted two doubles, driving in five runs.

Errors still beleaguered the squad, defensively, as the Lady Spartans committed four in the early game and registered eight in the late one.

They'll need to shore up the miscues on defense heading into the postseason next week. However, they've been swinging the bat fairly well as of late.

"We batted good," said Emporia coach Tom McClure. "It is something to feed off of going into regionals. Think everyone hit the ball hard tonight. We just have to see who we play. Scout, prep, and go play Spartan Softball!"

The 5A West brackets will be set Saturday. The top seeds will be Great Bend (23-1), Bishop Carroll (23-3), Salina-Central (21-5), and Maize South (19-7) or Arkansas City as the fourth seed.
