Jets Are Facing Their 'Most Important' Season Opener In Years
As irrelevant as they've been for the last decade, the New York Jets were downright abysmal in 2025 under head coach Aaron Glenn, starting the season with a league-worst 0-7 record en route to a 3-14 record. As they head into 2026, fans agree that the season will probably be over immediately if they lose in Week 1.
Ahead of the NFL schedule release coming later today, the Jets are reportedly going to face the Tennessee Titans on the road in Week 1. The Titans are headed up by Robert Saleh, their former head coach from 2021 to 2024.
With Titans coming off a similarly abysmal 2025 season and facing their former head coach, Jets fans and analysts are rapidly acknowledging that if they can't take down Saleh's team, Glenn and their season are doomed:
"I don't care what anyone says, Week 1 against Robert Saleh and the Titans is a MUST WIN for the Jets if Aaron Glenn is going to survive the season. Lose that game and it's over," ESPN New York's Jake Asman wrote on X.
"Fair or unfair, Aaron Glenn's #Jets are walking into arguably their most important season opener in years. No season is over after a Week 1 loss, but there would be major questions if they couldn't beat Robert Saleh's Titans," Nick Faria of the PFWA wrote.
Hot Seat for Glenn
Despite being a team legend for the Jets as a player, Glenn showed very little to justify even being brought back for a second year, let alone continuing to stack losses. With team owner Woody Johnson showing less patience than ever in his coaches to end the team's 15-year playoff drought, Glenn might not last the season if he doesn't at least have the team looking good early in the season and the fans know it:
"This might sound ridiculous, but this is a most must win game for the Jets. Woody Johnson is going to judge this as Saleh vs AG. If the Jets lose turn up the heat on Glenn's seat."
"Week 1 will tell us a lot on how much improved the roster truly is and if Aaron Glenn can actually coach/call a defense. This roster on paper is greatly improved. Now go out and its time to put up or shut up. Go win or get fired."
"It's fair after an ungodly 2025 that justifiably could've cost his job. Facing a bottom 5 team with a new coaching staff is as good as it gets."
Last year the Jets game up 503 points, the second-most in team history, and their -203 point differential was the third-worst in team history. The Jets ranked 29th in offense and bottom-10 in defense.
Most shamefully of all, they became the first team in modern NFL history to go the entire season without recording a single interception on defense.
The team made some savvy offseason moves, overhauling the coaching staff, re-signing star running back Breece Hall and drafting a few highly-touted prospects in David Bailey, Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper. But the biggest mystery of all will be solving their decades-old QB conundrum.
Simply put, the Jets need to show quickly that they are more than just an easy W on someone else's schedule or Glenn's future in his beloved franchise will be bleak.
