Mets' Carlos Mendoza Shares Luis Robert Jr., Jorge Polanco Injury Updates Before Diamondbacks Game

The New York Mets have endured a disastrous start to the 2026 MLB season. Despite the Mets' league-leading payroll, totaling over $330 million in 2026, they enter Sunday 15-24, tied for last place in the National League with the San Francisco Giants.

Several members of New York's star-studded lineup have failed to meet expectations offensively, while mounting injuries to key contributors have only compounded the club's struggles during the early portion of the season.

One of the Mets' biggest ongoing concerns is the status of 28-year-old outfielder Luis Robert Jr., as the former All-Star and Gold Glove winner has been sidelined since April 26 with a herniated disk. Robert Jr. has yet to return to baseball activities. Manager Carlos Mendoza also shared another uncertain update regarding veteran infielder Jorge Polanco, whose recovery process continues to be inconsistent.

"Luis Robert Jr. still hasn't commenced any baseball activities, Carlos Mendoza said. Still no timeline on Jorge Polanco who has ‘good days and bad days.' The wrist is progressing but the bursitis remains a problem," Mets writer Laura Albanese of Newsday wrote on X.

Infielder Jorge Polanco also remains sidelined as he continues to deal with Achilles bursitis. The 32-year-old former All-Star has missed every game since April 15, dealing with his Achilles injury as well as a right wrist contusion.

Both Polanco and Luis Robert Jr. will also be looking to rebound from disappointing starts to the 2026 season whenever they can return. Prior to landing on the injured list, both veterans struggled to produce consistently offensively, with Robert Jr. batting .224, and Polanco a dismal .179.

With New York in urgent need of answers offensively, ranking 29th in MLB in total runs, the continued absence of two veterans only adds more uncertainty for a team hoping to turn its season around. The Mets face the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday with a chance to win the three-game series.
