Sports Quote of the Day: Pat Riley's Lesson on Commitment

It's one thing to win a championship, and it's another to win multiple in different roles. That's Pat Riley's experience, and his career is still going.

The New York native won SEC Player of the Year honors at Kentucky in 1966 before being drafted No. 7 overall by the San Diego (now Houston) Rockets in 1967. He then won the 1972 NBA championship as a reserve with the Los Angeles Lakers before retiring after the 1975-76 campaign.

Riley then became an assistant coach with the Lakers and helped them win the 1980 championship before becoming the head coach in 1981 and led Los Angeles to titles in 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988. This is known as the "Showtime Lakers" era featuring superstars like Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Riley's next title came as the president and head coach of the Miami Heat in 2006. After becoming the full-time president and naming Erik Spoelstra the head coach in 2008, the Heat won titles in 2012 and 2013 with LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh.

Riley's resume earned him a spot in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2008. Few other figures in the NBA are more well-respected, as he's experienced success in every phase of his career dating back to the 1960s.

Riley's career wouldn't have happened without an undying commitment to the sport and chasing greatness in different roles. The two-time NBA Executive of the Year has a famous quote about commitment that serves as a lesson for everyone.

"There are only two options when it comes to commitment. You are either in, or you're out. There's no in-between."
