Bulldogs Falter in Series against Osage City, Sets up Important Series against Southern Lyon County

The baseball season is starting its final stretch as teams look to finish the year strong, and Chase County is one of those teams looking to cap off a strong season. The Bulldogs played a Friday series against Osage City in a key series for both teams, but they were on the losing end of the series.

Osage City 10- Bulldogs 4

A fast start for the Bulldogs was not enough for them to overcome Osage City. The Bulldogs scored their four runs in the first two innings, but couldn't get anything else going after those two innings. Wyatt Griffin and Hudson Doty led the offense as both had two-hit days, and Doty drove in a run.

"I liked that we were able to jump out early in game one. That shows what we're capable of offensively," Head Coach Brent Monihen said. "We had some good at-bats and put pressure on them. We just need to find a way to keep that going for a full game."

Noah Green got the start in game one for the Bulldogs, and he pitched well, going three and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits, walking two, and striking out eight. The issue was the Bulldog defense, as they committed ten errors in the game, which led to Green allowing five unearned runs.

The nightcap had a different flow to it as neither team could do much through the first three innings of play. Both teams were held scoreless as the starters were dominant early. Then, a seven-run explosion from Osage City put the Bulldogs in the hole for the rest of the game. They got five unanswered runs back through innings four through six, but another three runs from Osage City in the seventh put the game away.

"In game two, it took us a little while to get going, but I thought we settled in and started to string some hits together in the middle innings," Monihen said. "Overall, there were some positives, but we're still looking for that consistency at the plate from start to finish."

Offensively, the Bulldogs saw Caleb Dexter, W. Griffin, and Green each have two hit days. W. Griffin, Doty, and Dexter each had RBIs on the day. Doty got the start and, after the fourth inning, was tagged with the loss after allowing eight hits, seven runs (five earned), walking two, and striking out three.

"I thought our guys competed well, but we just didn't do a good enough job limiting the big innings. That's really what it came down to," Monihen said. "We had stretches where we played solid baseball, but against a good team like Osage City, those few lapses can really hurt you. I was proud of the effort and the fight, but we've got to be more consistent inning to inning."

With the series loss, the Bulldogs fell to 11-9 on the season. Next up for the Bulldogs is a crucial series against Southern Lyon County, with the series on home turf on April 28.

"Southern Lyon County is always well-coached and fundamentally sound, so we know it's going to be another challenge. They'll throw strikes, play clean defense, and make you earn everything," Monihen said. "For us, it's about cleaning up the little things-throwing strikes, playing solid defense, and having quality at-bats. If we can limit mistakes and stay consistent, I like our chances to compete."

Softball

Osage City 11- Lady Bulldogs 0

This game set the tone early for the series as the Lady Bulldogs of Chase County couldn't get much going on either side of the diamond. Osage City scored four in the first inning and added seven more runs to end the game in five innings. Natalie Neff, Vonda Danford, and Naomi Peters were the lone hits on the day for the Lady Bulldogs.

Lahna Passmore was the losing pitcher in the game after allowing 11 runs (four earned), 11 hits, walking three, and striking out four batters.

Osage City 14- Lady Bulldogs 1

Osage City scored in every inning but the sixth while the Lady Bulldog offense couldn't break through the pitching. The Lady Bulldogs got their lone run on a wild pitch in the fourth inning. Neff, Peters, and Dakota Phillips had the lone hits for the Lady Bulldogs. Neff got the start and went five innings, allowing seven hits, ten runs (seven earned), walking four, and striking out two.

The Lady Bulldogs fell to 8-6 on the season and will have to face a tough Southern Lyon County on April 28.
