Letter of the Week: Stop budget cuts affecting public libraries

Steven V. Potter, library director and chief executive officer of the Mid-Continent Public Library, wrote in a Feb. 18 letter to the editor about budget cuts affecting public libraries.

Libraries could not get many new books because of this spending cut. My family loves reading, and we go to the library to have as many as 150 books checked out at a time among four library cards.

I own the Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus series and more. But I have read all of them and want to read more.

I have always wanted to get my Ph.D. in military history and the American Civil War, but my knowledge in these subjects would go blank if my main resource except for school is denied to me.

We must stop the onslaught of budget cuts for one of the supreme American values — education.

Cole Bower, 11, of Kansas City is a sixth-grade student at Discovery Middle School in the Liberty School District. He has a sister, Katie, 9, and two brothers, Luke, 7, and Evan, 4. His parents are Kevin and Callie Bower.
