The Kansas House has approved a measure that would prohibit minors from using tanning devices such as sun lamps and tanning beds.
Representatives voted 77-44 Thursday in favor of the bill, sending it to the Senate for further consideration.
Salon owners could be fined up to $250 and incur disciplinary action for allowing people under 18 to use tanning devices.
Supporters of the measure say it would protect young people from ultraviolet lights that can cause the deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma.
Never miss a local story.
The American Academy of Dermatology says people under 35 who use tanning devices are nearly 60 percent more likely to develop melanoma.
Critics argue the bill prevents parents from deciding what is best for their children.
