AMC showing election night coverage at ‘red’ or ‘blue’ movie theaters
AMC Theatres will show CNN’s election night coverage in 25 cities around the country, including two in Kansas City. But knowing full well that people who vote for Donald Trump won’t want to sit with people who vote for Hillary Clinton, the company designated theaters as “blue” and “red.”
“As Americans gather in their communities to watch the conclusion of this historic election, we recognize that Democrats want to cheer with fellow Democrats, and Republicans cheer with fellow Republicans,” Elizabeth Frank, an executive vice president at the Leawood-based chain, said Monday in a statement.
Locally, AMC’s Barrywoods in the Northland is the “blue” theater, and Studio 28 in Olathe is “red.” Doors open at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, and the event begins at 6 p.m., when polls close on the East Coast.
“AMC allocated two theaters per participating market and used voter registration to determine which location is blue and which is red,” said spokesman Ryan Noonan.
The event is free but open only to AMC Stubs members, who may each bring two guests. Joining the Stubs program is free for the basic level and $15 a year for a premium level. See amctheatres.com.
