Database: Find out how much city employees in Kansas City made in 2016

Three Fire Department employees, the city manager and the medical doctor ranked among Kansas City’s top paid city employees in 2016.

The Star analyzed the salaries and gross pay for all city employees, which are public record because they are paid with tax dollars.

Kansas City paid more than $256.8 million to its 4,369 employees in the 2016-2017 fiscal year, which ended in April, according to data provided by the city in response to a public records request.

The Fire Department got the biggest share, with nearly $95.8 million in gross wages — $13.2 million above base salaries.

Several of the top-paid employees last year worked in the Fire Department and earned an extreme amount of overtime, The Star reported earlier this year. Fire Chief Paul Berardi said the overtime occurred when the department had about 68 vacancies for shifts that needed to be filled. He said vacancies have since dropped and should be reduced even further.

Other top departments by gross wages included Water Services ($44.6 million) and the Aviation Department ($20.4 million). The Kansas City Police Department is separate from the city and is not included in this database.

All City Council members were paid $66,441, and Mayor Sly James was paid $123,227, according to the data.
