Middle schooler found dead soon after exiting school bus, Michigan officials say
A middle school student was found dead not long after he exited his school bus, Michigan officials say.
The Handy Middle School student was dropped off at a stop near MacGregor Elementary School on April 15 and was soon found on a sidewalk, Bay City Public Schools Superintendent Rick Seebeck said in a letter to families obtained by Breaking News 989.
A neighbor discovered the eighth-grade student on the sidewalk and called 911, WJRT reported. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Foul play is not suspected in the 14-year-old’s death, Bay City Sgt. Ben Krzyminski told WNEM, but a cause of death remains unclear.
The boy was believed to have been walking toward his home before being found unconscious, WNEM reported, citing police.
Students in the nearby elementary school were kept inside and later exited through the other side of the building as first responders arrived, the superintendent said.
The boy has not been publicly identified as of April 17.
“We are heartbroken for this family and will do all we can to support them during this time,” Seebeck said in a statement.
Bay City is about a 110-mile drive northwest from Detroit.
