Some things were just never meant to be placed in the human mouth.
That gum stuck under the theater seat. Creamed corn. And probably this.
Behold the Pop-Tarts and cheese sandwich.
According to Chris Jorgensen, “You ain’t from Iowa if you never had one of these.”
Never miss a local story.
Jorgensen’s recent tweet, which has gone viral and scored a headline in Ireland, has people reaching for the communal barf bag. The Iowa State University sophomore, who is the visuals editor at the Iowa State Daily student newspaper, still hasn’t heard the end of it.
This tweet from ISU campus police just about sums up the public’s reaction.
Apparently this is what happens when the cupboards run bare.
Jorgensen told The Des Moines Register that one night when there wasn’t much to eat in the kitchen he decided to experiment by creating something as disgusting as the “gross foods” he’s seen on Twitter before.
“I thought: ‘What could be the grossest thing I could put between two Pop-Tarts?’” Jorgensen said. “So I went to the fridge and got a cheese slice.”
So it’s not really an “Iowa thing” after all. It’s more of a “bored college student” thing.
But then angry Iowans with pitchforks started mad-tweeting at Jorgensen — over a snack.
“I think I’ve done some damage to the state of Iowa,” he told The Register.
But it’s more than a crime against the Buckeye state. No wait, that’s Ohio.
Twitter denizens have declared this a crime against a perfectly good snack food, as well.
Actually, as Jorgensen has suggested in a couple of tweets, those might not be Pop-Tarts at all but generic toaster pastries from Hy-Vee.
Pop-Tarts or not, the learning curve of the last few days has been steep for this college student.
