Sugar Creek Mayor Matt Mallinson is saying he’ll run for the Missouri state Senate seat once held by Paul LeVota.
Mallinson joins two other Democrats, state Rep. John Rizzo and Jessica Podhola, in what shapes up as a three-way race for the 11th District Democratic nomination. The primary is in August, and the seat is expected to remain vacant until then.
LeVota resigned amid sexual harassment allegations involving interns.
“I’ve had a lifelong service to the community, and I’m continuing that,” Mallinson told Jeff Fox of The Examiner of Independence.
The 11th District covers Sugar Creek and most of Independence. It’s considered reliably Democratic.
Rizzo is in his third term in the state House and serves as minority whip. Podhola of Independence is a former executive director of the Jackson County Democratic Party who now works for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades.
