Kansas City, Kan., man is suspected in Lawrence shooting
A 22-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man was in police custody Friday, a suspect in the overnight shooting of a Lawrence man who suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.
Lawrence police responded to a shooting call in the 3000 block of Steven Drive about 12:30 a.m. and found that a 27-year-old man had been shot during a disturbance at the home.
An air ambulance took the victim to a Kansas City area trauma center, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence police spokesman.
Police began searching for a 22-year-old man from Kansas City, Kan., who was staying at the home and who fled before police and medical personnel arrived.
About 7:40 a.m., the suspect was thought to have stolen a vehicle left running in a driveway near 24th and Alabama streets in Lawrence, McKinley said. A Lawrence officer quickly saw the vehicle on East 23rd Street and a pursuit began.
After reaching speeds of about 100 mph, the fleeing driver lost control of the vehicle, which crashed near Kansas 10 and Church Street in Eudora, Kan., McKinley said.
His injuries were not life-threatening, said police, who had not yet identified the shooting victim or the suspect, who is expected to be charged later.
