Liberty man sentenced for collecting dead mother’s Social Security benefits
A Liberty man was sentenced to federal prison Monday for collecting his mother’s Social Security payments for five years after she died.
Jeffery Schwed, 40, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Kansas City to five years in federal prison without parole. He was also ordered to pay $84,137 in restitution to the federal government.
Federal prosecutors said that Schwed had a joint bank account with his mother. After she died in 2007, he did not notify the Social Security Administration, which continued to send monthly checks to the account.
