A 23-year-old woman who was shot early Sunday in Kansas City is not expected to recover, according to authorities.

Tashari Nelson was one of two women injured in a shooting shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday in the 3700 block of Jackson Avenue.

Police responding to the incident found Nelson with a gunshot wound to the head. On Monday she remained hospitalized and had been declared brain dead by the Jackson County medical examiner, police said. Nelson’s family was making arrangements for possible organ donation.

Nelson has three daughters, ages 6, 4 and 2. She had worked as a nurse ever since she graduated from a Job Corps program as a teenager, according to her mother, Trinika Nelson.

“She was just the best mother in the world,” Trinika Nelson said. “She was compassionate. She worked with the elderly.”

More than 100 people attended a vigil for Nelson on Monday at Blue Valley Park.

Another woman injured in the incident Sunday also suffered a gunshot wound to the head but was expected to recover, police said.

The investigation continued.
