Two men in apparent murder-suicide were Excelsior Springs neighbors

Excelsior Springs police have identified the two men who died in an apparent murder-suicide from gunfire Friday in the 1300 block of Lake Maurer Road.

According to authorities, Timothy Todd Logan, 53, shot and killed his neighbor, Cletis R. Southwick, 49, outside a home. The shooting occurred about 11:20 p.m.

Police said the two had disagreements in the past, but they have not determined what prompted the shooting.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the incident. Police are continuing their investigation.

Logan shot Southwick in the abdomen with a rifle, and Southwick ran to a neighbor’s home for help. He told police where he thought Logan may have fled, according to initial police reports.

Officers searched that area and saw Logan, armed with a rifle, flee from the area. As they set up a perimeter, the officers heard a single gunshot.

They found Logan dead from an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Southwick was rushed to Liberty Hospital. He died about 8 p.m. Sunday, police said.
