A Kansas City, Kan., woman charged in the child abuse death of her 7-year-old stepson has been ordered to a state hospital for a mental examination.

Heather Jones, 30, and her husband, Michael A. Jones, 45, are charged in the death of Michael Jones’ son Adrian Jones. The boy’s remains where found last November on property rented by the Joneses. Investigators determined that his body had been fed to pigs.

Both initially were charged with first-degree felony murder done during the commission of child abuse. Wyandotte County prosecutors recently amended the charges to include an alternative count of first-degree premeditated murder.

A judge also ordered Heather Jones to the Larned State Hospital for an evaluation to determine if she is competent to stand trial. The court proceedings for her have been suspended pending the results of the evaluation.

A preliminary hearing for Michael Jones still is scheduled for April 8.
