Man wears bird outfit at bar after allegedly burglarizing costume shop

It was a caped caper that led to charges of burglary and theft for “John Doe 87,” a mystery man who allegedly broke into a costume shop and then wore his new outfit to The Cashew bar downtown on Thursday evening.

He was charged as John Doe because as of Friday afternoon he had refused to reveal his name or any other information to police.

According to a police report, a witness sitting outside The Cashew at 20th Street and Grand Boulevard about 8:45 p.m. Thursday saw the man break the glass window of the Kansas City Costume Co. store next door, pull out a yellow cape and run south on Grand.

The witness described the man “as a white male, intoxicated, wearing a yellow cape with a hat with feathers,” the report said.

Police found a pile of glass and a brick on the sidewalk and costumes strewn about the display window.

Shortly before 10 p.m., police received word that a man matching the feathery description was inside The Cashew and that the restaurant staff would attempt to keep him there until officers arrived.

They found him sitting at the front bar. There was a brief struggle, and the man yelled “police brutality” as he was being arrested, the police report said.

The man would not give his name and had no identification in his pockets. He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital for medical evaluation and later booked into jail.

The man was charged with second-degree burglary and theft, both felonies. Prosecutors requested bond at $25,000.

The owner of the costume company told police the stolen outfit was worth $7,500 and would cost about $500 to clean and repair.
