Man shot to death Sunday night in Kansas City
A man was shot to death and five others were wounded in weekend shooting incidents in Kansas City.
The city’s latest homicide occurred about 7:50 p.m. Sunday near 39th Street and Indiana Avenue.
Witnesses told police that the man was walking near 40th Street and Indiana when another man pulled out a handgun and began shooting at him. The victim ran north on Indiana and into a restaurant, where he collapsed. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he died.
Another shooting early Saturday morning injured two teenagers. They were found about 3:45 a.m. Saturday wounded in the parking lot of a gas station at 59th Street and Swope Parkway. Police said a 17-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries and a 16-year-old girl was less seriously hurt.
A few hours later, police were called to Truman Medical Center where a 19-year-old shooting victim had been brought by a relative. The relative told police that the victim had been shot while standing in the doorway of their house in the 800 block of Ewing Avenue. The victim was listed in serious condition.
On Saturday night, a shooting was reported in an apartment complex parking lot in the 9400 block of Cleveland Avenue. Witnesses told police that the victim and another man were in a fist fight when the other man pulled out a gun and began firing. Three bullets hit the victim. His condition was not available Monday.
About 12:15 a.m. Monday, a man was shot in the head near 20th Street and Wabash Avenue by a suspect who fled the scene in a wheelchair. According to court documents, the bullet struck the back of his head but did not penetrate his skull. He was treated at a hospital. Police later arrested 21-year-old Johnny B. Alvarez. Prosecutors charged him with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
The men had been smoking methamphetamine together before the shooting, according to court records.
