KC man charged in attack with screwdriver on Independence Avenue
A 31-year-old man has been accused of stabbing an acquaintance in the head with a screwdriver following an argument about paperwork.
Hersi K. Abdi of Kansas City, faces charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action in connection with the attack Saturday morning in the 1400 block of Independence Avenue.
The victim was in grave condition Monday at a hospital and was not expected to survive, prosecutors said. They requested Abdi be held in jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond.
According to court records:
When police arrived, Abdi pointed them to the severely injured victim and said he had stabbed the man in self-defense.
A witness told investigators Abdi and the victim were arguing about money.
Surveillance video showed the victim and Abdi talking next to a yellow semitrailer. The victim did not make any threatening movements toward Abdi. Moments later, Abdi climbed into the cab of the truck and the victim pulled the door open. The two fought after Abdi climbed out. Abdi stabbed the victim.
Investigators found several screwdrivers in the driver’s side door of Abdi’s truck.
Abdi told investigators he had past conflicts with the victim. He also said the victim left a threatening message on his voice mail several weeks earlier.
