Missouri man pleads guilty in illegal purchase of gun used in Overland Park killing spree

A southern Missouri man has pleaded guilty to buying one of the shotguns used in last year’s killing spree outside Jewish centers in Overland Park.

John Mark Reidle, 48, who is from the same town where convicted killer F. Glenn Miller Jr. lived, provided false information when buying the 12-gauge shotgun at a Wal-Mart store four days before the deadly shootings, according to his plea agreement filed this month in U.S. District Court.

The shotgun was recovered from Miller’s car on April 13, 2014, after he shot three people to death outside the Jewish Community Center and the nearby Village Shalom care center.

A Johnson County jury later found Miller guilty of capital murder and recommended a death sentence. His sentencing in Johnson County District Court is scheduled for Nov. 10.

According to Reidle’s plea agreement, Miller told him that he didn’t have any identification with him and asked him to fill out the federal firearms form to purchase the gun. Miller told him the gun was a birthday present for his son, according to the agreement.

Reidle violated the law by indicating on the form that he was buying the weapon for himself. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

A sentencing date has not been set.
